Located about 5 miles north of Cambridge (see map at bottom of this page) , Cottenham is one of the larger villages in the area, offering convenience in terms of proximity to Cambridge, whilst also being amongst some idyllic countryside.
Boasting a long high street, Cottenham gives you plenty right on your doorstep, with a Butchers, Greengrocers, bakery, library, GP surgery, dentist, and post office. You can see a map and a list of services at the bottom of this page.
Billing itself as the “classic village pub” The Hop Bind is a popular local in Cottenham. Its staff provide a warm welcome - as does the log burner - and if you’re a fan of gin you’re in luck as they stock over 30 different types for you to sample. Whilst over at The Chequers, home made pizza from their Italian Pizza chef is their speciality, alongside a wide selection of ales and specials.

If you’re looking to dine out in Cottenham, you have the option of the award winning Curry Palace. With a wide range of culinary styles to try, you could give yourself plenty of reasons for repeat visits - or to have delivered if you fancy a night in with quality food.

After growing quite rapidly in the 60s, a variety of local traditions where brought back - such as beating the boundary - and a lot has been done to build community cohesion and spirit. One of the places that helps this is The Cottenham Community Centre. It runs a variety of classes including yoga, zumba, and pilates, and you can relax afterwards in their coffeeshop.
Cottenham even has some global significance - it was home to the ancestors of the 30th President of the United States, Calvin Coolidge, and to the famous diarist Samuel Pepys.
To get a more local view of the area, I asked one of my clients - Chloe Fuller - who moved there a few years ago, what their experience of Cottenham has been like.
“We had never considered moving to Cottenham until we met Gavin whilst viewing a property in Girton, which was our first choice area. We had always thought Cottenham was too far out from Cambridge, but Gavin persuaded us to view this really nice detached house. Now, five year later, we could not see ourselves living anywhere else - we just love it. Gavin was spot on, the sense of community is great and the village has a great Butchers who do the most amazing sausages; and a really good old fashioned Greengrocers.
We stay in the village for everything, and often enjoy drinks and food at The Hop Bind or sometimes treat ourselves at the weekend to a Curry from the Curry Palace. The kids love the local school and have a great group of friends. We really couldn’t be happier and really appreciate the fact that Gavin pointed us in this direction.”
