Going back in time, Histon was one of the biggest villages in the county in the middle ages. The village street was the main route from Cambridge to the Isle of Ely in medieval times.
Situated about 4 miles north of Cambridge, Histon is a charming, real "villagey" village, from the picturesque duck pond to quaint thatched buildings. In fact, Histon was so admired that in 2017 it featured on TV as a semi-finalist for Village of the Year.
For a small village, Histon packs a convenient retail punch with pretty much everything you'd need on your doorstep, making local shopping easy. There is also a quality selection of food and drink establishments to cater for all tastes and occasions, including The Boot, Histon Smokehouse, and the Red Lion, which has been serving beer since 1836 and won CAMRA's pub of the year for Cambridge in 2017.
I've been making an effort to shop local and explore different areas to support local businesses. Whilst passing through Histon, I stopped off to grab a quick coffee break and tried out Stir - the Histon branch. The staff were friendly and welcoming and although I just had a flat white on this occasion, the menu was enough to tempt me back for a future visit. (Update - I have no een back MANY times!) If you try any of these places, tag me and them on social media and if you have any tips for places I haven't mentioned - please let me know! Next week, I'll be putting the #FocusFriday on Burwell.
