Get into Girton #FocusFriday

Updated: Oct 27, 2023

Just a couple of mile north-west of Cambridge we find the village of Girton - the village that also lends its name to one of Cambridge's colleges. Let's take a closer look, including some unusual local wildlife!

(You can find the map of Girton at the bottom of this page along with links to local services.)

Girton has a a strong and active community spirit, with many groups and activities available for all ages, many taking place at Girton Pavillion. You can see what is happening in the area via their community website.

And what was that about unusual local wildlife? Well, whilst lots of places have seen the grey squirrel push out the red squirrel, Girton is one place where a different squirrel has come to prominence - the black squirrel. It isn't a different species, more that a genetic mutation causes a different colouring and if two grey squirrels have this mutation they will produce a baby squirrel (a kitten) that is black. One report suggests that up to 75% of the squirrels in Girton are black squirrels.

A rare sporting reference in these #FocusFriday pages is provided by Girton born footballer Vic Watson. After shining for Wellingborough, Watson was bought by West Ham United, where he went on to grace the FA Cup Final as well as becoming their all time record goalscorer - a record that still stands today. His goalscoring exploits were recognised at international level when he played and scored for England.

If you want to carry on the sporting tradition, there is plenty to keep you active in Girton with the 18 hole Girton Golf Club, and the Girton Tennis Club, which has its own teams and also offers coaching sessions. If you wanted something a little less strenuous to stretch your legs, you could take advantage of the leafy Girton Wood and take a stroll through nature.

The Old Crown pub/restaurant came under new ownership in 2019 and is a stunning destination venue as well as your cosy local that you can pop in for a friendly welcome and some refreshments. Their menu is a tempting blend of traditional ingredients with a stylish modern interpretation and presentation that makes your dish a feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds! The dining areas are exquisitely presented and on from the outside terrace you can enjoy views across the countryside.
